Meatfeed

Meatfeed is an installation I made with Pheobe Riley Law, containing 2 agriculturally inspired sculptures, one of which was made specifically for the installation. The other one is a trough already made by Pheobe, which we adapted into a sound sculpture using an audio transducer.

In this piece we explore cattle farming with specific reference to the UK's Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (or "mad cow disease") epidemic of the 1980s and 90s. The sound of the sculpture is made up of a piece of text we wrote and an electronic composition. I used the audio processes of wavefolding and feedback in the piece, referencing the cause of BSE - feeding cows meat and bone meal from other livestock - and the process by which it speads - infected proteins fold into harmful molecules called prions which cause similar reactions in nearby proteins, degenerating bodily tissue).
